Quick-and-Dirty Personal Finance Goals for 2011
As I was getting ready this morning I was thinking about all that I wanted to accomplish financially over this next year. I am going to rattle them off the top of my head so you could say these are my quick-and-dirty New Year’s resolutions.
Here they are in no particular order:
- Complete Baby Step 2 – Kill that debt, baby! Once and for all!
- Complete Baby Step 3 – Complete our emergency fund, 6 months of expenses in savings
- Cancel Credit Cards – Although we haven’t used our credit cards since March 2010, I want to get these accounts closed. Then possibly have a celebratory plastic surgery ceremony.
- Raise in income – money cometh.
- Refinance our house – Our interest rate is ridiculous and circumstances beyond our control have prevented us from being able to refinance. Once we do, this will add a significant chunk to our debt snowball.
- Blog more on KTD – it’s hard to believe that it’s been a little over two months since I last posted. I want this to change in 2011 even if it means I write more quick blog posts like this.
I’m glad I documented my thoughts from earlier this morning. I’m now anxious to check these goals off the list.
Get Cash For Your Old CD’s
Awhile back I took some of our old CD’s to a local CD buyer, ones that we didn’t want and that were already imported into our iTunes library. They bought several of them, in fact $80 worth but we still had a lot of CD’s left over. My brother later told me about an online CD buyer called SecondSpin.com. They buy CD’s, DVD’s and video games and either allow you store credit, exchange or cash(check). Of course, I was looking for cash to keep killing that pesty student loan debt!
Their site allows you to input the UPC from the back of the CD case into their system and they tell you whether the want it and at what price they will pay for it. It really is pretty quick and easy! They have instructions regarding what shape the disc, case and liner notes must be in order to qualify for their quoted price as well as shipping instructions.
Thankfully, I had a bar code scanner so I was able to scan all my CD’s UPC’s into a spreadsheet and bulk upload them into the secondspin.com site. Most of the discs were only worth .05 or .10 and I ended up sending them all the ones worth $1 or more, some 22 CD’s in total. I printed the order they emailed me off and packaged it with the CD’s and sent it via USPS Media Mail. (They reimburse a portion of the shipping costs shipped this way). A few days later, I received an email from SecondSpin stating what they accepted and what they deducted off the order. Two CD’s they said were too scratched (probably true) and didn’t want them and they also deducted a $1 for 2 jewel cases that were cracked. They can ship the unwanted CD’s back to you at your cost but I opted not to have that done.
I sent them 22 CD’s initially valued at $38 plus a little under $5 for shipping. They ended up sending me a check for $34 plus reimbursement of $4.33 for the shipping. I total of $38.33 which is not too bad I don’t think!
If I had it all over to do again I would still try to sell my CD’s locally first then try the online CD buyer SecondSpin.com. The rest of the CD’s that we have will most likely get donated to our local thift store charity and used for a tax deduction. KTD!!!
